Victoria Scott-Miller, Liberation Station, Raleigh, NC

Liberation Station is North Carolina’s first Black-owned children’s bookstore. The bookstore specializes in children’s literature by Black creators that focuses on positive Black narratives and characters.

In 2019, Victoria Scott-Miller and her eldest son, Langston, then 8 years old, visited a national chain bookstore and struggled to find children’s books by Black creators that focused on positive Black narratives and characters. That experience led the Raleigh, NC family to spend $200 to buy 113 books by Black authors or Black illustrators to start a pop-up shop specializing in children’s literature that centers on Black children and families. On Juneteenth weekend 2023, Liberation Station Bookstore opened a brick-and-mortar location in downtown Raleigh, NC.

Recognizing that some families can’t afford books, Scott-Miller established Liberation Station libraries for children across NC by partnering with businesses and organizations. The libraries, located in museums, hotels, and universities, are safe reading spaces for children of color.
